Apple released Wednesday updated operating systems for developers: iOS 18.2 beta, iPadOS 18.2 beta and macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta. These new systems make many more Apple Intelligence features available on part of Apple devices. For iOS 18.2 beta, the new features are only available on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and the whole iPhone 16 series, which are capable of running these AI features.
Out of them, Image Playground will allow users to create playful images in moments. Image Wand will create an image using context from the surrounding area when a user circles an empty space. Users can create original Genmoji by simply typing a deion, or by selecting a photo of a friend or family member. Siri will be even more capable, with the ability to draw on a user’s personal context to deliver intelligence that is tailored to them.
Moreover, developers have the option to access ChatGPT’s broad world knowledge from several experiences within Apple’s operating systems. Apple said that Siri “leverages ChatGPT’s expertise when beneficial,” including answering world knowledge questions and understanding images and documents. iOS 18.2 also offers enhanced Writing Tools with integration of ChatGPT, with a new Compose with ChatGPT interface.
Apple said anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account. Users can also sign in to their ChatGPT accounts in the Settings app in iOS 18.2 beta, as well as disable the prompt that appears every time Siri wishes to hand a command off to ChatGPT. But they don’t have to log in with a ChatGPT account nor enable or use any of the ChatGPT integration. Apple said users control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of their information is shared, and ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences.
The iOS 18.2 beta includes the new visual intelligence feature. Available for the iPhone 16 line via the new Camera Control button, Visual Intelligence will allow developers to point their camera at a restaurant and immediately get information like its hours of operation and reviews. Apple said the new feature can also summarize the text users point their camera at, read text out loud, detect phone numbers and emails and offer to add them to their contacts, copy real-world text, and scan QR codes. They are also able to point their camera at an item and see where to buy it via Google or get more information about it via ChatGPT.
Apple introduced on September 9 the new iPhone 16 lineup, built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence, its advanced personal AI system introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year in June. The latest iPhone series feature the faster, more efficient A18 and A18 Pro chips, making these the most advanced and capable iPhone models ever.
Apple is seeking to entice buyers with AI features that didn’t come along with iPhone 16 launch. The company is reported to roll out Apple Intelligence to the public with the iOS 18.1 next week, enabling the first set of AI tricks on devices includes Writing Tools, Mail and notifications summaries, a more natural and flexible Siri, the Clean Up tool in Photos.
With Writing Tools, users can refine their words by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. In Photos, the Memories feature now enables users to create the movies they want to see by simply typing a deion. Natural language can be used to search for specific photos, and search in videos gets more powerful with the ability to find specific moments in clips. The new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo.
Siri has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when active on iPhone, iPad, or CarPlay.Users can type to Siri at any time on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and can switch fluidly between text and voice as they use Siri to accelerate everyday tasks. With richer language-understanding capabilities, Siri can follow along when users stumble over their words and can maintain context from one request to the next. In addition, with Siri’s extensive product knowledge, it can now answer thousands of questions about the features and settings of Apple devices.
